Microsoft hired Sam Altman, former CEO of OpenAI, commonly known as ChatGPT, after he was sacked on Friday by the board of directors. Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI company, was disheartened after Sam’s termination and he left OpenAI as well. Greg joined Microsoft to lead a brand new AI team alongside Sam.
Board members at OpenAI say that Sam Altman failed to maintain consistent communications with the board of members. As a result, the board of members felt a lack of confidence in Sam Altman to continue the leadership in OpenAI. As a result, the board of members fired him.

Microsoft tried to negotiate with OpenAI to hire back its former CEO Sam Altman, which didn’t go as Microsoft intended. Hours after negotiations failed, Microsoft hired Sam Altman to lead their Advanced AI Research Team. OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman, who left OpenAI after Sam’s termination, joins Microsoft to lead this new AI team alongside Sam.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the news on his own X formerly twitter account, “I’m super excited to have you join as CEO of this new group, Sam, setting a new pace for innovation. We’ve learned a lot over the years about how to give founders and innovators space to build independent identities and cultures within Microsoft, including GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, and I’m looking forward to having you do the same.”
Microsoft is one of the largest investors in OpenAI. Microsoft doesn’t want to put that relationship at risk, Satya Nadela clarifies that this transition period won’t affect that. Which can be seen on his following tweet on X.
We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them. And we’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success.
